How to Ride the RER

1

Enter the Station

Tap your Navigo card on the purple reader or insert your paper ticket. Wait for the green light and retrieve your ticket before passing through the turnstile.

2

Find Your Platform

Follow signs for your RER line. Check the overhead display panel on the platform - lit squares show which stations the next train will stop at.

3

Open the Doors

RER doors do NOT open automatically. Press the button or lift the handle near the door to open it. Don't wait for it to open on its own!

4

Ride & Monitor Stops

Watch the line map above the doors or listen for station announcements. Some RER trains skip stations, so verify your stop is lit on the platform panel.

5

Exit the Station

Keep your ticket until you exit! RER stations require ticket validation to leave. Insert your ticket or tap your card at the exit turnstile.

Transfers & Connections

The Ticket Metro-Train-RER allows free transfers within 2 hours of first validation. Here's what you need to know:

Transfers Allowed

  • RER to RER (any line)
  • RER to Metro (any line)
  • Metro to RER (within zones)

Not Allowed

  • Exiting and re-entering stations
  • Bus/Tram connections (separate ticket)
  • Airport routes (special ticket required)

Essential Tips

Do This

  • Keep your ticket until you exit - you need it to leave RER stations
  • Check the station panel for your stop before boarding
  • Stand clear of doors and let passengers exit first
  • Use folding seats only when the train isn't crowded

Avoid This

  • Don't assume doors open automatically - press the button
  • Don't stand at platform ends when 'Train Court' is lit
  • Don't eat or drink on trains (fine up to €68)
  • Don't block doors or aisles during rush hour

Ticket Fines

Random ticket inspectors check for valid tickets. Fine is €50 on the spot (€35 if paid within 3 days). Always keep your ticket until you've completely exited the station.
